Double Giving
in Oregon Legislative
Races
Double giving is
contributing to the leadership committees of both political parties. In
Oregon the Republican leadership committees are Majority 2000/2002, focused on
electing Republicans to the state house, and the Leadership Fund, which focuses
on Republican Senate candidates. The Democratic leadership committees are
Future PAC, focused on House races, and the Senate Democratic Leadership Fund,
that works to elect Democrats to the state senate.
These double-giving contributors seem to be as concerned about ensuring access
and influence as ideological commitment. A pdf
file of contributions from double givers is available.
About one out of every 3 dollars (32%) given in 2000 to Oregon's Republican and
Democratic leadership committees is from a double giver. There were 112
double givers in 2000. These contributors gave $1,043,128 out of the total of
$3,220,723 given to Oregon's leadership PACs.
The double giving trend is increasing. In 2002, 124 double givers account for
nearly two in five dollars contributed to the leadership PACs, giving $1,360,931
(38 percent) of the total $3,862,548 raised.
