First, some important notes:
Much of the flow
of money to candidates goes through political committees. The Money in
Politics Research Action Project has created a database of contributors of more
than $200 to key Oregon political action committees or PACs. The database also
includes the total amounts of contributions of $50 or less and total amounts
of contributions between $51 and $200. MiPRAP’s database on contributions to
key PACs breaks through the anonymity that many contributors gain by giving
to PACs rather than directly to candidates. The PACs included in MiPRAP's database
are those that were particularly active in the current election cycle raising
and spending significant amounts of money.
Contribution data for both 1998 and 2000 election cycles are available for the
PACs listed below. All the data is from the Elections Division. Contributions
are either cash or in-kind donations. The 1998 and 2000 data has been cross
referenced with summary data from the Elections Division. When there were oustanding
loans at the end of the election cycle those are noted. 2002 contribution data
is as reported during the election cycle.
All of these committees can spend money on both candidates and ballot measures.
The only ballot measure committee included is the major PAC, No Taxpayer Handouts
for Politicians, that opposed 2000's ballot measure 6 concerning campaign finance
reform. It is interesting to note that most contributors to this committee
were PACs or business groups. These organizations evidently didn't want
to see a change in the status quo. Let us know of committees that you want to
know more about!
