Over $350,000 was given to Oregon legislative and statewide candidates after the last reporting period. Almost one third of those dollars were the first donations to candidates from that contributor. "When the first contribution is made after the election, it sure looks like the donor is making sure they will have access and trying to keep the winner happy," says Janice Thompson of the Money in Politics Research Action Project.

Legislative leaders were major recipients of contributions recorded on supplemental reports. For example, Rep. Dan Gardner, minority leader of the Oregon House, received the largest amount of after the election contributions at $51,500. There are several other categories of after the election giving including "oops the other guy won," "wait and see," and "hedging your bets."

"Oops the other guy won" contributions were given to several candidates who won hotly contested races. The "oops" winner is the Oregon Optometric Public Affairs Council with five after the election contributions. The Oregon Health Care Association and the Credit Union Legislative Action Fund gave four "oops" contributions. Two groups gave three "oops" contributions, Building a Better Oregon, the PAC of Associated General Contractors, and the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. The Oregon Forest Industries Council gave two "oops" contributions.
